The poppy has been known for thousands of years. Poppy seeds and capsules have been found during archaeological excavations in European Neolithic settlements dating back to five thousand years BC. We found a Sumerian tablet dating back more than 4000 years, where the poppy is described as "plant of joy".

We know it mainly because we extract opium and heroin from it. Its seeds were often used in ancient Egypt, especially by priests who connected with the divine by consuming them. In ancient Greece, it appeared on coins.

Paver somniferum was also widely consumed in Imperial Rome, not just for its therapeutic properties, since by the 4th century there were nearly 800 shops selling opium; its price was fixed by decree of the emperor.

The use of poppy as a spice to flavor bread only dates from the 2nd century AD.

It is when picked before maturity that poppy seeds possess powerful narcotic properties, as do unripe capsules from which drugs such as opium and heroin are extracted.

Today, in addition to its use as a spice, it is used in medicine since it is used in particular to produce morphine and codeine.
